If you’re seeking a quality device that uses a well-known, properly-curated station aggregator (again, see Part 1 for more on this), you’ll be looking at about a dozen (or so) radios currently on the market. I’ve noted the aggregator in parentheses as well as the average US purchase price. To keep my review budget within reason, I contact a supplier and request a loaner unit for review that I may return or purchase afterward; otherwise, I purchase the unit(s) outright. Many have also touted Pure’s own proprietary aggregator, as well.These are not comprehensive reviews covering every feature; rather, in these summaries, I focus my analysis on their ability to tune stations, on audio quality, on portability, and simply on general usability. When I first unboxed the CC WiFi, I was a little surprised by its diminutive size: it is, perhaps, 30 smaller than I expected (based solely on web images and from the catalog). The front panel on the CC WiFi is very simple: one large knob, six buttons, and a monochrome backlit two-line alpha-numeric display. The main knob acts as both a selection dial and volume control. Once I had set up the radio and registered it with the Reciva aggregator, I was tuning in the world. But the radio is surprisingly lightweight, perhaps as a result of this. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised by the audio from the internal speaker. It provides a full sound and is more than adequate for medium-sized rooms. Bass tones are present, though not especially deep. It’s wonderfully balanced for the spoken word. I wish this number were, at the very least, doubled. Fortunately, you can pretty much operate the CC WiFi’s functions without the remote control (a bonus for those of us who tend to misplace tiny remote controls). The CC WiFi requires a DC power supply to operate; this is a shame because I suspect other listeners, like me, often enjoy radio away from home where there are no main power outlets. The unit is small enough, and lightweight enough, that it would lend itself very well to portability. The display is small enough that if you’re browsing stations with the accompanying remote control, you need to be within a few feet of the radio. If it’s across the room, however, it’s very difficult to navigate. As an example, I have a folder with local CBC stations from across Canada. Of course, I can press the right arrow on the remote to have the station name slowly scroll into view, but this is a cumbersome process when browsing the list.The CC WiFi has a surprising number of features for its price class. None of the criticisms above are necessarily deal-breakers, but some strategic upgrades to this radio would keep it competitive for many years to come. The buttons are spaced well across the front panel and have a tactile responsiveness and weight that speaks of quality. There is a dedicated volume rocker button, five memory preset buttons, as well as a dedicated tuning knob and five function buttons. As with most WiFi radios, doing so is not as enjoyable an experience as with most traditional radios, since you’re using a tuning control to move up or down through selections on a small display. Not to mention, it’s great to be able to turn the volume up from another room in the house. I do wish there was a way, however, to add stations to memory allocations via the smartphone app (take note of this for a future app update, Sangean!) Nice touch, Sangean! I haven’t measured the total playtime after a full charge, but I imagine it to be in excess of 24 hours. One obvious thing is a carry handle or strap, always useful.The WFR-28 has an auxiliary in, line out, headphone jack and power port (7.5 VDC). I should note that I’ve also been pleased with the Frontier Silicon station aggregator, as well; although more simple than other aggregators, FS just happens to provide all of my favorite stations and networks (do check for your faves before you buy). I am showing my ignorance, but is it possible to get those stations on either the Sangean, or Grace or other Reciva based radios, even if you have to pay for a subscription to a particular channel like CNN etc.? I think on an iPad you can buy premium channels on Tune-in, like those, but it would be much nicer to have a real solid square box radio by beside instead of having to fiddle with an iPad in the middle of the night, trying to hear something and go back to sleep. However, I downloaded the iPhone version of the Frontier Silicon app a few times, and can never get it to fully open. Have you heard of anyone else having the same problem? Thanks! It works great, but I have one question for you: did you have any difficulty getting the rechargeable batteries into the compartment? I feel like forcing them in, but I’m afraid of damaging the radio. Just wondered if anyone else is experiencing this. If not, what brand fits? I regularly access mine which is attached to the CC fm transmitter from the line out. Around the property I can tune in to the fm broadcast and access anything available either on the house server, Reciva, or Pandora. This makes all my radios instant Internet radio tunable with my IOS phone. It also allows me to un-mute the radio itself without hunting for the remote, or disturbing the radio itself on its shelf. Nice. It’s great! If so, I had no idea. That would certainly make the unit much more remote-friendly!

Small footprint, good sound from the speaker, small enough to put by the bedside stand, and a copious amount of stations to choose from. Even though it used another aggregator than Crane’s, it still had thousands of stations to choose from. I did a review of a Grace Mondo WiFi radio last year and I felt that it was a winner. I use mine for listening to international broadcast stations as well as scanner radios on the internet. Here is my review if interested. She loves hers! I love freeing up a computer to listen to streams. What’s nice is if you don’t see the stream from the station you’re looking for, then you go to Reciva.com and request for them to add it, then everyone using Reciva net radios can then benefit from the add-on. Nice to see that wi-fi net radios are finally catching on in North America. Like Mini Disc, it was mainly the rage in Europe and Japan, now it looks like these are finally getting a foot hold in the USA. And, for a much cheaper price as well. Still, for their time, and even now, I still like how they free up a computer. OH!!! And they were recommended for use to link on-air radio station for Art Bell’s Midnight In The Desert, before they were able to get a satellite link. So, I guess that I’m not the only one that thinks they are useful, as I’ve used these wi-fi net radios as stream to radio links as well. While on the site you can save stations and streams in My Stations and My Streams and then easily browse through those much shorter lists on the radio itself. I found navigating the Reciva site easy enough and saving memories quite easy via the CC WiFi, but I couldn’t find a way to shorten the name tags when browsing them via the CC WiFi display. I still listen to stations on a regular non-internet radio too so between those and the stations on the internet radio there are only so many stations one can listen to. Thanks for the efforts.. While the radio is unplugged from power, connect a standard Cat5 or Cat6 Ethernet cable (not included with radio) to an open LAN port on your router. Page 11 Choosing a Radio Station 1. From the Primary Menu, choose “Stations” by turning the dial until brackets are positioned on both sides. Press the dial to select. Personal Radio 2. Next, turn the dial to choose a radio station from either the “Location”, “Genre” or “Search” menu. Press the dial to continue into the selected menu. Note: The “Location” menu lets you choose a radio station from a particular continent then country. Page 12 Choosing a Radio Station Example: Radio stations are listed in alphabetic order, so you may need to turn the dial many times until your desired station is reached. 5. Press the dial to listen to a selected station.

Example: The display will show “Connecting” followed by “Buffering”. The connecting process can sometimes take up to a minute or two, depending on the speed of the station. Page 13 Searching for a Station You can search for an Internet radio station by directly entering the station name or call sign into the radio. 1. From the Primary Menu, choose “Stations” by turning the dial until brackets are positioned on both sides. Personal Radio 2. Next, turn the dial clockwise past “Location” and “Genre” to “Search”. Press the dial to select. 3. Page 14 Changing the Volume You can change the volume by turning the dial clockwise to increase the volume and counterclockwise to decrease the volume. The display shows the volume bar. You cannot change the volume when you are in a menu, except when using the remote control. After a station is selected and begins to play, you can then change the volume with the main dial. Store a Radio Station as a Preset A. Using the Controls on the Front of the Radio to Play Presets 1-3. Page 15 Menu Time-Out When a radio station is playing — if BACK or SELECT is pressed, the radio will go into menu selection mode. If no radio controls are used within ten seconds, the radio will “time-out” and go back to the currently playing radio station. Turn the dial and choose one of the five alarm slots to set — press the dial to select. 5. Turn the dial until the hour setting is correct — press the dial to select. 6. Turn the dial until the minute setting is correct — press the dial to select. Set Alarm 12:00 AM 7. Choose how frequently you want the alarm to sound. Choose between “Once”, “Every Day”, “Weekly”, “Week Days”, and “Weekends” — press the dial to select. Page 18 Setting the Sleep Timer With the sleep timer enabled, the internet radio will automatically switch itself off after a set amount of time. Note: At any point, you can use the BACK button to start over at the previous screen. 1. If you are currently listening to a radio station, briefly press the dial once to access the Primary Menu. You can also access the Primary Menu by pressing and holding the BACK button. Page 19 Media Player Functions 6. “Timer Set” will show in the display indicating that the radio will play for the selected amount of time before switching itself off. Timer Set Media Player Functions The CC WiFi Radio is able to play the following audio formats: FILE TYPE FILE EXTENSION SHOWN ON PC MP3.mp3 Windows Media.wma Real.ra iTunes.aac Ogg Vorbis.ogg Accessing a Computers Stored Audio Note: At any point, you can use the BACK button to start over at the previous screen. 1. Page 20 Media Player Functions Using “UPNP Servers” to access stored audio: This method scans for Universal Plug and Play (UPNP) servers on the network. UPNP servers gather media and distribute to other network devices. If using a Mac: You will be required to use third party software to enable your computer as a UPNP server. If using Microsoft Windows XP through Windows 8: It is possible to use your computer as a UPNP server without installing additional software. Page 21 Media Player Functions Play a Whole Album You may only play Whole Albums after you have accessed a computer’s stored audio. Refer to the section titled “Accessing a Computer’s Stored Audio” on page 19. 1. Turn the dial to “Music” — press the dial to select. 2. Turn the dial to “Album Artist” — press the dial to select. 3. Turn the dial to the desired artist — press the dial to select. 4. Turn the dial to the desired album — press the dial to select. 5. Page 22 Media Player Functions Browsing the List of Queued Tracks Press the BROWSE button on the remote control. The name of the track that is currently playing will be listed first. If you want to jump ahead to a particular place in the queue, scroll to the desired track and press the dial to select. Playing Queued tracks in random order (Shuffle Play) Note: The remote control can also be used. 1. Page 23 Configure Menu Options To access the “Configure” menu follow these steps: 1. Briefly press the dial once to access the Primary Menu. The Primary Menu contains six options: STATIONS, PERSONAL RADIO, MY STUFF, MEDIA PLAYER, CONFIGURE and ALARM CLOCK. 2. Turn the main dial until “Configure” shows in brackets — press the dial to select. Turn the dial clockwise to access all the options. Page 24 Configure Menu Options If the firmware upgrade is interrupted, your radio may endure permanent damage. A firmware upgrade may take several minutes to finish. Allows you to change the display language. This option puts all settings back to their default, as they were when the radio left the factory. If you perform a factory reset on your radio, you will lose all your presets, clock settings, and wireless network connection settings. Page 25 Configure Menu Options the UPNP Server. This option will give you your current WiFi signal strength between the radio and the router. Our experience shows that a signal strength of 20 to 30 is required for good reception. This list can be viewed or edited by clicking on the “Go to My Stations” link. 9. Page 27 Setting Up Extra Features There are several extra features and services that can be added to your CC WiFi Radio to enhance your listening experience. These services cannot be added to your radio until you have created a Reciva radio account online. Once your computer is logged-in to your Reciva radio account (radios.reciva.com), follow the steps below: 1. Click on “See extra features”. 2. Page 28 Using “My Pandora” The Doors Radio 4. If you are new to Pandora, you will not have any stations yet. Select “Create Station” and then enter in your favorite song title or artist name. Notice that the middle character on the top line is the one that is ready for selection. Rotate the dial to the desired character and then press SELECT by pressing the dial in. When a character is selected, it will be displayed on the lower line. Page 29 Using “My Pandora” your radio for quick playback. Also, this station will be saved in the “Stations” portion of “My Pandora”. Visit www.pandora.com for more options using the same Pandora username and password that you entered into your Reciva account. Using “My Aupeo” Before setting up Aupeo on your radio, you must first add this extra feature to your Reciva radio account. See “Setting Up Extra Features” on page 27. Using Aupeo: Select “Personal Radio” and then select “My Aupeo”. Page 30 Using “My Aupeo” “Jazz”). Once your preferences are selected, Aupeo begins to play music that matches accordingly. Once “Artist Station” is selected, the radio will display an interface for entering your artist name. Page 31 About “Live365” Live365 is a special collection of unique stations that are run by real people and not generate by computers or focus groups. Some free stations are available without having to create a Live365 premium account. Using “Live365” Live365 can be located on the radio by pressing SELECT on “Stations” from the Main Menu and rotating the dial clockwise past Location, Genre, and Search. Page 32 Using “Live365” VIP Stations. These stations are categorized by genre (or type) of audio content, such as Rock, Talk, and Blues, etc. Station results can then be selected and played. 1. Once “Search Live365” is selected, the radio will display an interface for entering your search term. Page 33 Help Pages — Wireless Network Help “No Networks Found” shows after scanning for wireless networks: 1. Sometimes your wireless network will not show on the first scan. Try scanning for networks again on your radio. 2. Check the LED lights on the front of your wireless router. Be sure that the “power” and “wireless” LED lights are on. If they are not on, you may need to call the manufacturer of the router for more assistance. 3. Your radio may be out of range of your wireless network. If all else fails, try calling the manufacturer of your wireless router for assistance with locating the routers wireless encryption key. Having Trouble Connecting to a Wireless Network: This problem can be caused by a number of possible scenarios. 1. Check your WEP or WPA wireless encryption key — it may be wrong. Page 35 Help Pages — Error Message Troubleshooting Timeout Getting IP Address: 1. An incorrect WEP or WPA key may have been entered into the radio. This is the most common reason for this error. Check your router to make sure your wireless encryption key is correct or see page 33-34 for more help with finding your encryption key. A good troubleshooting test is to temporarily try connecting to your router with encryption disabled. 2. Your radio may be too far away from the wireless router. Page 36 Help Pages — Error Message Troubleshooting 2. UPNP may be disabled on your router. UPNP must be enabled for the radio to work correctly. Consult your router’s user manual for enabling UPNP or contact the manufacturer of the router for more assistance. 3. Your router or modem may be temporarily confused even though your computer is working fine. Try unplugging the power from both the router and modem for two minutes. Page 37 Help Pages — Ethernet Network Help The LED Connection Light Does Not Flash When Cable is Inserted into Radio: 1. Be sure that the power is connected to both the radio and the router. 2. Your Ethernet cable may be damaged or incompatible. Use a “Straight Through” Cat5 or Cat6 Ethernet Cable. You can purchase Ethernet cables from C. Crane or your local electronics store. Having Trouble Connecting to a Network using an Ethernet Cable: 1. Be sure that your internet is working. Page 38 Help Pages — Radio Station Help Having Trouble Playing a Radio Station: 1. If you are unable to play all radio stations, the radio may have lost connection to your router. Unplug the radio’s power cord momentarily and reconnect. 2.
