This booklet will help you achieve optimum performance by explaining how you can adjust the binocular to your eyes, and how to care for this instrument. Read the instructions carefully before using your binocular. EYE ADJUSTMENTS (Figure 1)Move the barrels closer together or further apart until you see a single circular field. Always re-set your binocular to this position before using.Follow the focusing instructions below for your type of binocular. Zoom FeatureBushnell waterproof models are O-ring sealed for complete protection. Fogproof protection is achieved from dry nitrogen purging to remove all internal moisture.EYECUPS (Figure 4). Your Bushnell binocular is fitted with rubber roll-down, pop-up, or twist-up eyecups designed for your comfort and to exclude extraneous light. This will bring your eyes closer to the binocular lens thus providing improved field of view. Keep both eyes open at all times. Uncover the objective lens on the diopter side, cover the other objective lens, then view the same object. Caution should be used as over turning or forcing the diopter eyepiece can cause damage or cause the eyepiece to break away from the chassis. Your binocular should be adjusted for your eyes. Make a note of the diopter setting for your eyes for future reference.Non-waterproof models should not be exposed to excessive moisture. 1. If your binocular has roll-down, flexible eyecups, store it with the eyecups up. This avoids excessive stress and wear on the eyecups in the down position. 2. Avoid banging and dropping. 3. Store in a cool, dry place. 4. That dose mean that they do not get used as often as the small bins that were to be replaced, which is a pity. It seems you can find a bunch of whiners and crybabies out there for just about every rangefinder on the market and they sure do a hell of a job mucking up product ratings and adding a healthy dose of confusion to the mix. So I hope I can shed some light on this particular model, and rangefinder purchases in general. First off: This is an excellent rangefinder. The optical clarity is great and in foggy, rainy conditions it never fell through for me. After 3 days in rain sighting in bows and rifles, I can vouch for the waterproof body and had no problem at all with foggy lenses or inaccurate readings. The ARC system is a huge plus as a bowhunter and I found it was a great comfort to know both the line of sight and true horizontal distances with the push of a button. For those complaining of inaccurate distances or inconsistency, I'd recommend you take account of your own form while taking readings before bashing this device. A steady hand goes a long way and can clear up the odd off reading here or there. As far as max distance goes, it's clearly stated in the product description (of just about any rangefinder) that max distance is for highly reflective and large targets (best case scenarios). Obviously the further out you go the more steady you need to keep your grip and I found bracing against something as if you were looking through a rifle scope was the best bet. I didn't have the opportunity to use it much further than that, but I think common sense dictates the unit's effectiveness across various circumstances. If you're glassing elk from 1000 yards away on a consistent basis, you might want to invest in a higher end model. If you need a reliable bowhunter's companion for anything within a few times your bow range, I'd highly recommend this device. If I had to talk about some cons for this purchase, I would probably have to say that against certain backdrops, the black readings are a bit hard to see.However, the unit will take an accurate reading under these conditions. It's just a matter of you being able to read what it displays. I found you can take the reading and then utilize the 30 seconds it displays the last measurement by pointing the device to the sky where the black text has more contrast to be readable. I'd also criticize a lack of a proper lens cover. The case is alright but as basic as it get and I'd probably upgrade to something more deliberate to protect the actual device. I'd also probably go with an upgrade lanyard as the one that comes with is as basic as they come. Hope this helps those who are looking for a solid, entry level rangefinder for hunting. Golfers, I suggest you find a golf specific model instead of whining about a hunting centric rangefinder not finding the pin at 1000 yards. By adjusting the eye piece I can make the display in focus or the object I am reading in focus, but not both. IIRC, I can't look at a far object and read the numbers clearly. It seems like the adjustment should change everything you see in the eye piece but maybe I'm wrong. I need to read the book to see if it covers that. I bought this to do layout work for our shooting range. It does the job, but as others mentioned, it is hard to get readings on objects more than 300 yards away. I was trying to read off buildings, trees, k rails, vehicles, hillsides, etc.I need to be able to setup a 600 yard rifle range. I had a bushnell elite 1500 that ranged up to 1200 pretty good. Something burned out where it only goes to 160ish. That's why I bought this one. Nice and compact. Bushnell claims that the max range for trees is 800 yards, but I was only able to get this performance on trees with broad leaves before they all fell off this fall. I bow and rifle hunt and think if you are buying a range finder this is the one to get. I love the 6x magnification. There are all kinds of electronic adjustments on this range finder, so much I will never use or remember how to use in the field. Make sure you get a manual, you are going to need it, I think there was a downloadable one on the bushnell website. I know that it's expensive, but well worth buying one on sale or a used one. With selectable Bow and Rifle Modes, it has the same capability some competitors need to split into two separate units. I can't quite figure out the design of the neckstrap. Hooking it up to the unit is like any other lanyard, but the head hole itself has another two loop design, and I can't find anything about it online. Small gripe; I may just be stupid, and I can still use the strap. 3. It only gives readouts in whole yards. I have seen other range finders that give it to tenths of yards. This doesn't make a difference to me, but I was expecting the decimal. 4. The 1000 yard range is somewhat optimistic. Bow mode only goes out to 99 yards (understandably). However, to get a range beyond 800 yards in the other modes, the target must be highly reflective. In central and eastern Kentucky, we don't have many 1000 yard patches of flat space around, so it isn't a big deal, but again I would like to know that. The gun mode accounts for distance, angle and the type of bullet you are shooting. There is a list available on the disk in the box with the rangefinder where you find the exact round you are firing, including brand, caliber, type, and grain and it tells you which preset it corresponds to (A-J). This includes muzzleloader settings as well. There are thousands of rounds available on this list. If you buy your ammo at a sporting goods store or department, you can find it on the list. There is also a regular mode without any angle readout, but aren't you buying the ARC version of the scout for a reason?:) Additionally, you can toggle between two settings where you can scan across an area, and the Scout will only range the farthest object you hit or the closest. Example: there is a deer you can see through a tree branch, but you cannot get the sight only on the deer and keep hitting the tree--in this mode you just scan along the body of the deer and although your laser also hits the tree branch, the Scout knows only to give you the range of the farthest object. Conversely, at a distance if you see a deer in front of a backdrop of trees or land, but the deer is too small to keep the aim on, you can scan on the deer and even if you slip off of it, only the range of the closest object (the deer) will be reported. The optics are very clear. The 5x magnification is a good distance, and the focus control works nicely. The ranging works even better in low light than in brighter conditions. You can easily switch to meters (and centimeters in bullet drop) for all the metric fans out there. I grew up using yards, so despite the logic of the metric system, I keep using it when shooting.Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2016 This finder is advertised to range out to 1000 yards. It does NOT. I have yet to get a reading on distances for greater than 400 yards during mid day hours; even when mounted in a stationary position. At dawn and dusk it does a little better, but not much. Unfortunately I did not find this out until the one-year Bushnell guaranty period ended. I contacted Bushnell to see if there was any thing that they could do to help me out. They recommended that I sell the unit on Craig's list. WTF?
