The pressure gauge will tell you when you need to replace the pads. You will not want to filter wine which contains solids such as stems or oak chips. This will clog the pump and void the warranty. The output side comes with a hook for hanging to the side of the carboy. You may also want a racking cane ( R373 or R376 ) on this output side so your receiving vessel fills from the bottom instead of the top (to reduce oxidation.) The manufacturer suggests that you wet the pads before inserting them into the filterhousing. Run a couple of gallons of water through the pads before you start filtering the wine. To help neutralize the pads you can use one to two teaspoons of Citric Acid in 2 gallons of water and run that through the filter. MoreWine suggests that a stock sanitzing solution of potassium metabisulphite and citric acid (1 tblsp each in a gallon of water) ran through the filter followed by a cold water rinse would be the best way to treat your pads prior to use. The pressure gauge did not seem to indicate the filter pads needed changing (10psi), but it made a real mess, and we lost a few bottles worth of wine in the process. The pads are squeezed tightly between the plates, however, there is some natural wicking of wine past the edges of the plates, even under pressure. A cookie sheet under the filter is generally enough to catch all the drips. If that's not enough, something else is wrong and should be investigated. Ron 5.0 out of 5 stars Why you might ask? Because after reading them I find out the simple mistakes or lack of common sense. Ok you can read them for yourself. After reading the directions I found out that filtering a fruit base wine with a lot of wine must in the carboy. I knew that filtering it was not an option until I strained it threw a flour sifter first. Always do this if you have a lot of fruit in your carboy. I drained the wine threw the sifter, stopping a few times to clean out the plugged sifter. I soaked all my pads before using them.In total I filtered 18 gallons of wine. Three different types. Only one carboy was made with heavy fruit and that's the I ran threw the sifter first. The other 2 were kit wines So I used filters 2 and 3.

Yes I would recommend this filter to some one who maybe thinking about buying it. Remember just use a little common sense and don't be in a big hurry. This pump works great but it takes some time. But making a good wine takes time as well.I should preface: these meads had a hard life. I started them in non-ideal conditions and had a few AC outages this year that caused them to get far too warm. They had a lot of off flavor, and looked like lake water after 7 months (after two rackings each, there was no more sediment forming). I assumed they were either ruined or would take a few years to maybe possibly age to the point of borderline enjoy-ability. Enter the Buon Vino. I gambled and decided to see if filtration would help. I have experience with sub-micron levels of filtering through my job as a chemist, so I wasn't going in completely blind to what these filters could achieve. Man what a difference. Where before there was lake water, after there was mead I could read large print through. And far more importantly, the off flavors are almost entirely gone. I won't pretend they're prize winners but with some back-sweetening they'll be fine meads. Now here I'll give some usage tips, which I think is where a lot of the negative feedback comes in. Soak the pads, as they say in the instructions. This allows a tight seal to form, if you try to use the pads dry they'll spurt like you hit an artery. Run 5 gallons of clean water (and before that I'd recommend a small amount of food safe sanitizer like starsan) through the pump to flush the pads well, and TIGHTEN THE PADS AGAIN AFTERWARDS. The extra pressure and water will work the last bit of air out and allow a perfect seal on the pads. If you did it right the drip tray will be virtually empty by the end. And finally, most importantly, understand what filter you're using. Filters by their very nature clog with the crap they're trying to get out. faradayfinder.com/ckfinder/userfiles/files/Dranetz-808-Manual.pdf

Do NOT try and filter liquid that hasn't already been racked (you can rack with this if you buy the mesh screen for it and bypass the filter with a tube, but it isn't better than a racking cane). That will visibly clean the liquid, probably to reading clarity. The bad reviews I read about this product are almost textbook cases of using it wrong, and probably mostly not using the right filter. There's a decent chance you clog the filters, which is a mess. But if you follow the directions in the manual and use the advice above you should have an easier go of it.It is much more stable and works MUCH more quickly. It is easy to clean and (as long as you watch the video on youtube from the company - attached below) it is easy to use, for the most part. It is important that you read ALL of the instructions (sometimes a couple of times because the instructions are not 100 clear) so you know how to clean it and use the filters. The best thing about it is it does its job. The instructions (which I had failed to notice in this area) say to wait a couple of days to let the wine settle - I did that - and it still spilled everywhere - shooting out of the pads like a fountain. I really have not seen any problems with not using it. One tip in regards to the filter. At times, the filter seems to not have enough suction when pulling the wine out of the carboy. If this happens, turn on the filter (while the tube is in the carboy) and for a split second remove and then reattach the short out take tube that goes from the motor to the filter (remove the end attached to the filter). That will create a stronger suction and will get the wine to move through the tube with ease. In regards to the drip tray. Watch it very carefully. It tends to fill up quickly before it has time to drain through the tube. If you find it is not draining properly, make sure the drip tube is fully extended down into wherever you are leading it into (it's all about the gravity). {-Variable.fc_1_url-

So here's the breakdown - I definitely suggest this product if you are making 6 gallons or less (I cannot attest to anything more than 6 gallons). Here is the link on how to use the filter: Once we got it to work, it was great. We had a bit of an issue at the start because the white end piece that goes into the wine carboy was on too tightly and the flow of the wine was incredibly slow (so much so it was collapsing the tubing and would have taken days to filter one carboy. Once it was loosened off a bit, the system worked great. I agree with some comments that I've read that 4 legs would be more stable than 3, but it worked fine.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Q: When and how do I lubricate the gears on the Mini Jet Pump. A: On rare occasion, if the Mini Jet has been run dry or has overheated, it may be necessary to lubricate the gears. Q: I have air going into my pump and my wine is foaming. A: There are 3 possibilities.1. The wine is very young and carbon dioxide (CO2) is present. The pump will release this gas simply due to the action of the pump. The release of CO2 from the wine is a good thing; most kits recommend agitating the wine to help release this gas. 2. You have removed the port fitting (black connector on the intake of the pump). We recommend that this fitting should not be removed. If you have done to make sure that the O ring has not been crimped and that it is fully inserted into the intake hole of the pump. 3. The intake hose is vinyl and can expand. This will create a better seal at that point and not allow any air intake. Q: Wine is leaking too much out of the pads. A: 1. Please read the sheet that is supplied with the filter on suggestions and recommendations. 2. If you did not rack your wine and you have sediment at the bottom you may be drawing up some of the sediment and clogging the pads quickly. Rack your wine before filtering. 3. Identify the style and density of the wine you are making. Each batch is different and can also clear at different times. Red wines, due to the color, are much harder to identify. Never start filtering with the hose at the bottom of the carboy. Insert your hose about half way and gradually force it towards the bottom of the carboy. Do not allow the line to empty. This will make the pump run dry, potentially damaging your pump. 4. What type of wine are you making. Some wines clear faster than others and some types are heavier especially reds. Please read the Suggestions and Recommendations sheet supplied with the product. 5. Lubricate your tightening bolts at the thread with petroleum jelly or food grade grease. This gives the better ability for the hand wheels to tighten down on the filter area. Q. I need a new motor. The back fan is not turning and my pump is not working. This problem is identified by a buzzing sound coming from the motor, but your fan at the rear of the unit is not turning. A. This is a problem which most users of the Mini Jet will not encounter. It is caused by a gear inside the pump becoming stuck due to failure to flush out the pump properly after the last filtering session, oak chips becoming trapped between the gears, or allowing the pump to run dry. It is brilliant when used on a red wine with number 2 pads. But the wine has to be very clear when you use this. It is not for filtering wine !!! It is to polish a wine that has been clearing for weeks !!! Most complaints that I have read probably used this on foggy partially cleared wine trying to save time. If you buy this I would recommend putting wide rubber bands around the knobs for a better grip to help tighten them. I have a stern hand grip and I still need a little help. I would buy this only if you want to invest more time and money to have a beautifully clear wine. But if you drink a lot of wine it comes with more work and money. It is great if you give a lot away as gifts. It is a little messy. Be sure to soak the pads for a while in water (don't just wet them). Be sure to tighten the screws DOWN not just pretty tight. Make sure the recycle tube from the drip tray is functioning. But you will see a noticeable difference in the brightness of your wine, even if you are in the habit of racking three or more times. Next time, I'd save up for the big brother model. I've been making wine for a long time and have been looking for something like this, but this unit is messy and slow. I also lost 2-3 bottles equivalent of wine due to the water used to saturate the filter material. It comes out of the pump diluted and undrinkable until the filters are fully saturated with wine. If you have a lot of time for prep and clean up then this pump is for you. Otherwise using the pre-filter stuffed with cheesecloth with a little co2 on the back end is what I am using now and it works almost as well. Give us a call. Some sites say 3 pads each time. Instead of using charcoal It will not work to filter wash. I also brew my own beer, can I filter my beer with the mini jet wine filter? It will only work for filtering wine. The pump should be rested after the 15 minutes. Give it a half an hour before turning back on. All Rights Reserved.
