Noble Baker 4.0 out of 5 stars The first step is to throw away the manual that came with it. The manual that comes with it will only cause you to tear your hair out. It applies to 11 different models and none of them seem to be this model. I finally called technical support to learn how to use it. It helps to understand how Bunn coffee makers work.The first step before even plugging in this unit is to fill that reservoir by pouring 3 pitchers of water in to the top slowly until water starts to flow out of the funnel. Then plug it in and turn on the switch at the back. Mine had a plastic tie that had to be cut in order to flip the switch. That is because you can damage the machine by turning it on with no water. Now you are ready to brew. As soon as you add cold water to the machine, an equal amount of hot water will Immediately begin flowing into the brew funnel. Now comes the part where I take off 2 stars. This unit is advertised as brewing up to 3 liters. While it is technically true that you can fill a 3L airpot, if you try to pour 3 liters in at once it will overflow. The technician at Bunn told me that it is actually designed for 64oz at a time, or about 2L. That means you have to add the water in two stages, waiting a couple minutes between. Doing this I see that the temperature of the water, which peaked at 192F, drops to 163F by the end of the brew. This may not affect the final flavor of the coffee, as I think most of the extraction happens early on. The only way around this temperature issue is to put in 2 liters, wait for the light to come back on, then put in the rest. The only reason I spent the extra money was for the convenience of brewing 3L at once. I am still debating whether to return this, but I don't really want to wait for a replacement as I need to brew a lot of coffee this weekend. Update: I have raised my review from 3 to 4 stars. I've been using this pot for 8 months now and it is great. SInce I wrote the review initially I contacted Amazon by chat and they refunded me the difference in price from the other Bunn model mentioned above. This brewer makes excellent coffee and it makes it fast. If they update the description to clarify that you can't pour 3 liters of water in at once I will upgrade to 5 stars.It worked exactly as expected. You need to use filtered water, with these though because hard water will corrode the internal parts and the heater and it will just stop working. That is what happened to the one that needed to be repaired. A lot of tap water is hard had has calcium and chlorine that will corrode the element and the tubes quickly. These brewers are great and the coffee is the best.This smell has continued for two weeks, and is a horrible, strong odor. Most of the water in the tank will flow from the sprayhead tube opening. Some water may flow from the area around the top lid. Continue tipping the brewer until the flow stops. 8. Conical Burr Grinders The most popular burr grinders for many coffee shops are conical burr grinders. The first noticeable characteristic of conical burr grinders is the design of the burrs themselves. Due to the cone-like shape, a conical burr grinder will naturally force the beans downwards in between the blades. The outer serrated burr sits around the venter burr, which is a small erect cone covered in sharp blades, breaking down the coffee beans into smaller pieces. Many baristas favor the conical burr because it creates something called bimodal distribution. If you were to grind coffee with a conical burr grinder and then observe it underneath a microscope, you’d find that the grounds look uniform in size to the naked eye, but are actually two different sizes. With one grain slightly smaller and one slightly larger, the balance of the two sized grinds both encourages and restricts water flow. Though it may sound a little counterproductive, this method is a favorite of many experienced baristas because it actually makes for a smooth, strong shot of espresso. Flat Burr Grinders The flat burr grinders are a much different story. As far as the positioning of the burrs is concerned, flat burrs have two horizontal blades, one that faces upwards while the other faces downwards. Coffee beans are fed in between the burrs and are ground down before dropping between them for a second time.
