In Ethiopia, the practice of using alternative ingredients to produce materials was observed weak in some scenarios. It was because ignoring the right procedures to perform the required material requirements for construction materials. It is known that Ambo area has a scarcity of natural sand or rivers sand which can be extracted from the river bed. Notably, if available, the quality is not good due to the presence of silt and clay. Once it used, it adversely affects the structural integrity of concrete structures. The primary objective of the research is to evaluate the suitability of Ambo Sandstone Fine Aggregate (ASFA) as an alternative replacement of river sand in normal concrete production. Samples extracted from Senkele and Aleltu quarry sites of Ambo Area. Results showed that fine aggregates from Senkele quarry site indicated 14.28 silt content, while from the Aleltu quarry site indicated 12. http://atonenergia.com/images/canon-pixma-450-manual-pdf.pdf

28 silt content, all of which exceeded 6 based on Ethiopian Standard Specification. It means the samples must be rejected or appropriately washed before use as a part of a concrete mix. After performing the procedure to remove silt content, it found out that the silt content reduced to 5.3, less than the allowable maximum of 6. Hence, Ambo Sandstone Fine Aggregates (ASFA) are suitable for concrete mix production and strength determination. There were nine samples of concrete cubes prepared and tested at 7 th, 14 th, and 28 th days for concrete compressive strength with a mix ratio of 1:2:3 and water to cement ratio of 0.50. Based on the laboratory test results with full replacement of river sand by Ambo Sandstone Fine Aggregate (ASFA), the mean compressive strengths at 7 th day was 16.61 MPa, while at the 14 th day was 19.62MPa, and at 28 th day was 25.59 MPa. It means at 28 th day; it satisfied the minimum requirement for C-25 grade concrete. Likewise, the cost of production of the fine aggregate of the Ambo Sandstone quarry site is 140 ETB per cubic meter, while the price of river sand from Legeher Market is 300 ETB-400 ETB per cubic meter. Therefore, Ambo Sandstone Fine Aggregate (ASFA) is cheaper than the river sand. However, it must be given emphasis that the Ambo Sandstone Fine Aggregates must wash thoroughly before use in construction projects. The staff at Test Mark is dedicated to providing superior customer service and quick response for all of your testing equipment needs! East Palestine, OH 44413. In the past decade, testing for the quality of materials and finished construction has become a necessity that no responsible builder can neglect. Such catastrophies include dam failures, collapses and foundation breakdowns in multi-storeyed office and apartment structures; and other failures in stadia, factories, schools, auditoria, public buildings and bridges. A variety of factors influence the type of testing required. Among these factors are size of the structures, terrain, type of soil and subsurface conditions at the construction site and other conditions peculiar to the specific location. The expertise of the construction engineers and technical personnel working on the project will also have an influence on the testing and inspection need. Testing facilities may range from a simple, inexpensive test kit carried in a portable chest to a fully equipped Central Testing Laboratory. However, such laboratory must have well experienced persons to run it properly. A person may be trained in 15 days time for conducting all the above mentioned tests. Close. For example, the moisture content of a piece of timber weighing 500 g, and containing 250 g of water can be calculated as follows:It is also necessary to have the right kind of ventilated oven, which means it is impractical in many instances. The more resistance to the electrical current the drier the timber, since water is a conductor and timber is a natural insulator. It creates a reading of the average moisture content in the scanning area.Generally, five bricks are tested one at a time, with the average ultimate pressure level being taken as the compressive strength of the bricks. They are then weighed again. The difference between the weights indicates the amount of water that has been absorbed by the brick. The less water is absorbed the greater the quality. The amount should not exceed 20 of the dry weight. It is generally a white or off-white colour with a powdery appearance. To test for alkalis that may cause efflorescense, a brick is immersed in fresh water for 24 hours and then left to dry. The ranges that should be followed are:If no impression is left then it is of good quality. They should not break and a clear metallic ringing sound should be made if they are good quality. If it is good quality there should be no flows, cracks or holes on the broken face.A damp sand sample is placed in a straight-sided container, filling to around two-thirds. A rule is inserted to measure the depth of the damp sand (e.g. 150 mm). The damp sand sample is then removed from the container and set aside. Clean water is poured to half fill the container. The sand is then placed in the water in two halves and tamped down with a rod to remove any air. The rule is inserted to measure the depth of the saturated sand (e.g. 124 mm). This is important as too much silt will weaken the concrete. The sand sample is then added up to the 50 ml mark. More salt water solution is poured up to 150 ml before shaking the cylinder well. The height of the silt layer should not be more than 6 ml, or 6 of the sand sample height. The filling and tamping should be repeated three more times until the cone is full and the top levelled off. The cone is then removed and the resulting slump measured. If the mix is consistent, the slump should remain the same for all the samples that are tested. The usual slump specification is 50-75 mm.A standard 150 x 150 x 15 mm steel test cube mould is used, thinly coated inside with mould oil. A concrete sample is taken from the discharge outlet of mixer or from the point of placing on site. The mould is filled in three equal layers (50 mm each), each layer being well tamped with at least 35 strokes. The cubes are tested on the face perpendicular to the casting face. A constant progressing force is exerted until the cubes fail. The reading at the failure is the maximum compressive strength of the concrete. The varying surface densities will affect the impact and propagation of stress waves which can be recorded on a numerical scale known as rebound numbers. These rebound numbers can be graphically plotted to correspond with compressive strength. The depth of penetration is inversely proportional to the concrete’s compressive strength. At the appropriate time, the bar and a piece of concrete are pulled out using a tension jack. Although the concrete fails in tension and shear, the pull out force can be correlated to the compressive strength of the concrete. The readings can then be used to correlate compressive strength. Test equipment for conducting laboratory accelerated wheel track and full-scale accelerated testing are also included in these facilities. Compaction equipment includes: manual, mechanical and mechanical slanted foot rotating base Marshall, kneading compaction up to 200mm diameter, Superpave gyratory compaction, Corps of Engineers gyratory compaction, and linear kneading compaction. An environmental room or environmental chambers can be used to control temperature and humidity during testing. Facilities for durability testing include high temperature cycling, freeze-thaw and wetting-drying. This equipment can be programmed for a range of loading conditions. A computer interface provides the facility for acquisition and processing of data. The computer system can also function as a controller for tests and provide freedom for selection of the type, magnitude and frequency of loading. Recent projects have included studies on the early hydration of cement, sulfate attack on concrete by SEM backscatter techniques, the freeze-thaw durability of high-strength concrete, alkali silica reactivity and means to minimize it, influence of silica fume on the pore structure of concrete and image analysis characterization of cement microstructure. This internationally known laboratory was named after Dr. Charles Pankow, President of the Charles Pankow Building, Ltd, whose generous donation has provided for the purchase and maintenance of a significant amount of the equipment found in the lab. Equipment available for research include. The PWL together have around 240 staff, consisting of professionals, technical and clerical staff, some of whom are consultant staff. These include the testing of aggregates, bituminous materials, cement, pulverized fuel ash (PFA), Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), concrete cubes and cores, steel reinforcing bars, timber, rubber, soil and rock, in-situ CBR and soil density, building blocks and bricks, concrete kerbs, geotextile, manhole covers and pipes, etc. About 643,000 tests on various construction materials were carried out in 2018. Results of all accredited tests are presented on HOKLAS endorsed test certificates and reports. A data bank on cement and steel bar is also maintained by the PWL, which is open to all Government Departments and members of the public. To ensure testing quality, the PWL carry out regular audits, surprise surveillance inspections and parallel testing at the contract laboratories. In some circumstances that the requested services are not readily offered by local commercial laboratories and resources are available in PWL, the public may also utilise these services by paying a fee (details are given in an Information Brochure on the PWL testing services Download PDF and a Schedule of Fees Download PDF ). For enquiries, please call 2305 1290 during office hours. The most common tests performed are oedometer, direct shear, triaxial, compaction, classification and various types of strength and stress measurement tests. The PWL are capable of testing up to 18 soil specimens simultaneously. Recent examples include using infrared heating technology for rapid soil moisture content determination and testing unconfined compressive strength of cement stabilised soil. This technological advancement reduces significantly the time required for drying and the moisture content can be determined within about 3.5 hours comparing with at least 20 hours when conventional oven is used. This helps to speed up the progress of filling works on site. Through this test, unconfined compressive strength of cement stabilised soil cores can be measured for verifying the quality of deep cement mixing works. PWL Quality Management System The vast majority of these tests are accredited by HKAS. The tests include in-situ soil density, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), skid resistance of road marking and road surface texture depth and regularity. In addition to in-situ testing services, laboratory testing services on the properties of sub-base materials, paving blocks, concrete cubes, bituminous materials and aggregates are also available in the Regional Laboratories. The services provided include calibration of balances, calipers, compression and tensile testing machines, depth gauges, dial gauges, extensometers, feeler gauges, lever arm ratio, load cells, masses, micrometers, ovens, pressure gauges, proving rings, scale rules, stop watches, thermometers, thermocouples, transducers and volumetric apparatus, flatness and surface texture of metal surface plates and skid resistance tester. Most of the calibration services are accredited by HKAS. They include testing of concrete, steel, bituminous materials, etc. To ensure the quality of the outsourced services, a dedicated team of professional and technical staff is responsible for administering the term contracts for these outsourced tests. The team liaises with HKAS on matters relating to accreditation and carries out audits of the PWL and contract laboratories. It also collaborates with HKAS on organising proficiency tests.
