If the current IP is unknown the unit can be located using NAS Navigator. If NAS Navigator is not installed, download and install the application by clicking here. If there is an existing array you wish to change, you will need to delete it first. Note that this will delete any data on the array. For this example, click Array1. Each RAID type provides different strengths and weaknesses. For more information on RAID levels please read this. For four-drive units there will be additional RAID types allowed. Here we have the option of RAID 0 or RAID 1. RAID 0 provides more usable space and better performance but has no data redundancy. It will have half the usable space and will be a bit slower, but if a drive fails the data can still be accessed. In our example we're going to use RAID 1, which is the default configuration. In a two-drive unit like the one in this example you should select both drives. In a four-drive unit you could create two RAID 1 arrays, but normally you would create a RAID 5, 6, or 10 array using all four drives. Again, reference the link above for a more complete description of different RAID types. Once you have the parameters set as you want them, click Create RAID Array. The screen below is only an example. Enter the code given by your unit and click OK. Once the process is finished the following dialog should be displayed. Click OK. If clocks on your network vary by more than 5 minutes it may cause unexpected behavior. Shared folders cannot be accessed during the disk check. I liked the fact that it was on the network, it was faster than other models, the price wasn't too bad. My computers are older and I do not have any with USB3, so this was the fastest option without investing in a new system. I did update the NAS with the latest firmware once I had it setup and connected to my network. I had to setup the RAID array again, because it comes default out of the box as RAID 0 (4gb available), but I wanted it setup as RAID 1 (Mirrored 2gb Available) so I could have redundancy. Having experience with hardware setups, it did take me some time to figure out the interface, but it wasn't too difficult. The unit is very quiet. I have been using it for about a month, and haven't had any issues with it being unavailable. I did feel that it took an abnormally long time to format the drives and make them ready. My Roku, this NAS and the Mac Mini are all on a wired network, so I have no times as far as wireless access. It takes about 30 seconds to transfer a 2 GB movie from the Mac Mini to the NAS. Playing a video from Plex has no lag, even from the iPhone app on Verizon's wireless network. Now that I have my media library on there, my other goal is to have some type of iTunes server for my music.I have followed instructions found doing a web search that will allow to you setup two different computers to use the same library. What I found is that you must use the same iTunes ID, and both computers cannot access the library at the same time. Even with these small issues, I did get it to work, but this is still a work in progress. I haven't used the USB port that is attached to this device, the built in uTorrrent client, or FTP, but I will update this review once I use those items. As far as cons, I really don't have any. It has exceeded my expectations. Here are some wishlist items for future versions; I wish the formatting didn't take so long. I wish the drives were bigger for the same price. I couldn't afford larger drives, but would have loved getting (2) 4Gb drives. It would be nice if the USB port was USB3 instead of 2. All in all an outstanding purchase. EDIT: So now that I've used this for a while and had some issues I'd like to update my review. Big issue; If one of the drives fail, you must replace the entire unit according to Buffalo. The customer service tech I spoke with stated they cannot just send out a replacement drive on the 2 drive units. How horrible is that. Now I have to find another 2TB drive and do a backup. You can't do a backup from the included USB port because it will only format using Linux to get the full amount of space, otherwise you're stuck with FAT32 which has a 32gb partition size limit. I could get them to send me one first, but then I would have to put up my credit card which I didn't want to do. The reason I purchased a NAS unit with RAID was because if the drive failed, I'm supposed to be able to swap out the drive and keep chugging. This is just unacceptable. On the plus side, the uTorrent client works fantastic. You can paste in the link to the torrent and it queues it up right on the device. Pretty slick. The iTunes server was a bust, mostly because of how itunes works and they make it incredibly difficult to use 2 itunes accounts linked to a single library. I gave up after having problems, and my wife getting really confused. Plus loading the library from that device took forever, and that was over a total wired network, not wireless. I like that I can configure RAID 1 or RAID 2 (I've chosen redundancy over speed) and that it is a traditional NAS (as compared to the Pogoplug which requires an application install). The drive sizes are nice (2 TB each) and the device is very quiet. The product has an external USB hook-up, to add an additional drive. Performance-wise, it works fine, but is slower than I anticipated it would be. I'm considering changing to RAID 1 and doing a manual backup to a separate drive. Which leads me to my next issue: the product will allow you to back up to it, but cannot back up the Linkstation drives to a secondary drive. The iPhone apps for the product are completely unusable in my opinion. With Pogoplug, I could back up my iPhone photos to a drive I've chosen (through the app). Linkstation can back up my photos, but I have little choice in the location. The only use I've found for the app is to determine (remotely) whether I've lost power at home. If you are more of a tinkerer than I am when it comes to NAS setup, your mileage may vary relative to performance (including App performance). I followed the user manual that was somewhat straight forward but with trial and error I was able to get the folder setup. The great part about the NAS is being able to view photos that are a thumbnail for easy searching, Viewing Videos and being able to Fast Forward. I found these features are NOT available when the camera saves to the Micro SD Card. I will E-Mail Buffalo support with this idea and see if it is possible. I am not affiliated with Buffalo in any way but am so pleased with this NAS after struggling with WD MyCload just wanted to let others know there is a simple NAS solution. Contacted Buffalo with E-Mail wanting to know if NAS has ONVIF, could not find in manual, Buffalo support, never did respond. I have mine setup so that each 2 TB drive mirrors itself so if one hard drive fails I can take it out and replace it without loosing data. My main intention for this product was to use it as the main storage for all our personal documents, pictures, videos, music, etc.I setup the NAS with two disks in RAID 1 (All data was stored at the same time in the two disks within the Buffalo NAS). I did this with the idea that if one disk failed I had all my information in the other disk as a back up. After exactly only two years of use, I got an error message from the NSA saying that the RAID was in degraded mode and that one of the disks had failed. The instructions in the manual say that you should buy an identical disk, replace the bad one with it, and the Buffalo NAS will copy the information to the new disk. That is exactly what I did but the Buffalo NAS did nothing. At this point I wasn't able to access my information on the good disk and the Buffalo NAS won't connect to my computer. I reached out to Buffalo in order to get technical support and after emailing back and forth for a month and a half they have offered no solution. My experience with their technical support has not been good. I am giving two star rating because 1. the product failed after a short period, both the hard rive and the NAS, 2. technical support is non existent, 3. the Buffalo NAS did not work as it was supposed or meant to be, it was not able to access the data once one of the disks failed. I would not recommend this device. One last piece of important information, when I bought this device I had the impression that in the most dramatic case where one of the disks and also the NAS failed, that I would be able to pull out the disks and connect it to my PC directly in order to access the data. The reality is that the Buffalo NAS runs a Linux based file system which is not readable in PC.
